We invite Gold Star mothers to help us locate the grave sites of the 5,100+ fallen World War I service members who returned home aboard the USAT Wheaton in May 1921. (Sign up now)

How it works:

  • Using transport and burial records, we have identified the city and state where the Wheaton returnees were sent for burial
  • We have created a simple tool to search for the returnees in the Find A Grave database
  • We are hosting a series of two-hour Zoom video conferences in which we will walk participants through the process of finding and capturing the cemetery name, address, section/row/plot of grave, etc.
  • When you sign up for a workshop, we will try to assign you a list of names that are from your state. If this is not possible, we’ll ask you to assist with nearby states, or states that have longer lists (e.g. NY, PA, VA)

What you need:

  • A desktop or laptop computer with an internet connection (a large tablet can work, but may be difficult for typing)
  • Basic internet skills – if you can buy something online, you can do this research project!
  • Two hours of time on one of our workshop dates!
