« BACK: The Decision

The bodies of America’s fallen began coming home in late 1920.  

They arrived by ship in New York Harbor and other ports on the East Coast, and then were sent to their next of kin in communities across the country.

In 1921, as the pace of returns began to increase, the government decided to select one of the returning ships for an official homecoming ceremony.
